Zoe Karelas, Melrose, and Ryan Duggan, Saugus, both received the Thomas Bourke Helping Hands Award at North Shore Community College’s 52nd annual Student Service Awards Ceremony. This annual award honors students who generously and unconditionally give time to support and enhance the College community.
The award is named for retired Dean of Students Thomas Bourke who, throughout his 27 years at NSCC, was a staunch supporter and advocate who devoted much of his professional career to the growth and expansion of the college.
Karelas, a student in the Environmental Studies program, was recognized for her outstanding contribution to NSCC’s Environmental Club. Her nomination letters described her as “…willing to come to campus early or late to ensure we have coverage at events” and praised her for donating her time to help in a green curriculum class focused on climate change. Karelas has served NSCC as a Civic Ambassador and is a member of the student leadership honor society, Sigma Alpha Pi.
Duggan’s nomination acknowledged that, “Although this is only his first year at the college, he has done an exponential amount of work to enhance student life. He brings a contagious positivity and energy to each project he works on.” A Liberal Arts student, Duggan is a Presidential Scholar, a member of the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa and the Environmental Club.
