During the February school vacation week, 16 students from North Shore Community College’s Upward Bound Program attended TRIO Day 2016. National TRIO Day is an opportunity for celebration, reflection and action focused on increased access to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over 600 TRIO students and staff from 35 different programs in six states convened for two days in Burlington, Vermont.
TRIO Day 2016 provided Upward Bound students with information about academic preparation for higher education, the processes of college admission, how to cultivate leadership skills, financial aid & financial literacy, student engagement, social and cultural capital skill building, and career development. 13 colleges and universities hosted college visits and over 50 admissions and education professionals were in attendance for the college fair. Students were able to participate in college visits, go to a college fair and attend workshops on boosting financial literacy, and learn about the financial aid application process. Students listened to a cappella groups and spent time networking with other TRIO students, staff and alumni. Overall it was an empowering and eye-opening experience for our UB students and a wonderful event to be a part of.
