After 13 years of leading North Shore Community College through unprecedented growth and expansion, President Wayne M. Burton has announced that he will retire on July 31, 2013. The next president of NSCC will have a unique opportunity to lead an outstanding and vibrant academic community and commit his/her creative energy and leadership skills to a thriving college in a culture that cares – “where all are welcome and each is challenged.”
The Board of Trustees seeks a new President who will have successful experience in community and civic engagement and be an advocate for the College and its students in the community, with legislators, and within the Massachusetts system of public higher education.
In keeping with guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education, a Search Committee has been appointed by the Board of Trustees that is representative of the College’s constituencies. They will meet over the coming weeks and months to evaluate and interview candidates, culminating with campus visits to be scheduled in September for approved finalists.
A catalyst for change, President Burton’s tenure has included four consecutive years of double digit enrollment increases, resulting in the college’s highest ever graduating classes. He created a culture of championing student success – boosting the college’s outstanding and innovative academic programs. His vision and strategic leadership resulted in the addition of two new buildings to the college’s Danvers campus and advanced the college’s role in preparing the region’s workforce with skills training programs to meet state workforce needs.
As the 100th president nationwide to sign onto The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, he spurred the adoption of a holistic commitment to sustainability and led construction efforts for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ first, and nation’s second, Zero Net Energy Building, the new state-of-the-art Danvers campus Health Professions & Student Services Building, which opened in January 2012.
“In his 13 years as President of North Shore Community College, President Burton has positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of NSCC students and made a tremendous contribution to the workforce development and economic vitality of the North Shore region,” said Richard Yagjian, chair of the college’s Board of Trustees.
