Through offering education and training on high demand jobs, and partnering with businesses on the North Shore that need skilled workers, North Shore Community College is helping to improve the lives of its students, meet employer needs, and boost the economic viability of the region.
Case in point – in the spring of 2013, Rebecca Pelletier of Peabody, enrolled in both NSCC’s Dental Assisting Training and its Department of Labor (DOL) Transformational Agenda College2Career (C2C) Program. As part of her education, Rebecca did an externship with Dr. Steven Baratz at his dental practice in Marblehead. She made such a great impression, she was soon hired as an employee.
“Rebecca was a true professional the moment she arrived in our office. The training she received gave her the terminology, basic instrumentation and materials,” said Dr. Baratz. “Her desire to get the dental procedures right was very high and with my tough standards, she held up very well. I am very appreciative of NSCC’s performance and feel lucky Becky found us,”
One year later, in the spirit of paying it forward, Rebecca recently returned to NSCC to speak to the spring and summer dental assisting classes. Her story, advice and encouragement helped students relax and look forward to their new career paths in the dental field.
“My experience at NSCC was a very positive one. I was very fortunate to have been offered a job upon completion of my externship. Under Dr. Baratz’s guidance, he and his team helped me to learn what it means to be a dental assistant. Without NSCC’s training, I doubt job placement would have come so easily for me,” Rebecca said.
North Shore Community College’s Dental Assisting Program is just one of many career-related trainings offered through NSCC’s Corporate & Community Education Program. Additionally NSCC’s College2Career staff work with students in Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Tech, Home Health Aide/Certified Nursing Assistant, Central Sterile Processing, Medical Interpreting, Advanced Manufacturing, EKG and Human Services Programs. Solid partnerships with NSCC’s Corporate & Community Education Division, several other College Departments, the Salem/Lynn Career Centers and community agencies, assures C2C students receive comprehensive services, guidance and support from career exploration through placement and often beyond.
“Rebecca is a perfect example of how our program, with its embedded career coaching, as well as strong collaborations between our coaches and instructors, has successfully guided students in their chosen field of study,” noted Kelly A. Sullivan, Assistant Dean of Liberal Studies/MCCWDTA Director.
