One-Year College Program Leads to Hottest Jobs in Today’s Economy
Statistics show that this week, in a 25-mile radius of Danvers, there are, 2,067 jobs that require social media skills, with salaries starting at $40,000 and growing to $95,000. Job titles like ‘director of social media’ and ‘digital and social media manager’ at the Boston Globe, CBS Corporation, Dunkin Brands and Fidelity Investments have become common. Small and medium size companies often add social media requirements to existing marketing communications job descriptions.
The number of higher education institutions offering courses in social media is growing but not fast enough to meet demand. North Shore Community College recognizes the education gap for traditional students coming out of high school AND professionals in the workforce with no social media marketing experience. The college launched its first social media marketing strategy course in 2015.
This fall, NSCC will offer Massachusetts’ first 30-credit social media marketing certificate program. Students completing the one-year (10-course) certificate will fill the employment gap in social media marketing jobs upon graduation.
The NSCC Social Media Marketing Certificate uses the latest educational methodologies to provide theory and practice in the ever-evolving world of digital and social media marketing. The advanced marketing courses in this program all include critical industry certifications that social media agencies and businesses demand, such as Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Buffer, Facebook Blueprint and Google Adwords. Courses are updated continually to keep up with changing technologies and best practices.
“I applaud our dedicated faculty and academic leaders for the foresight and initiative to develop this innovative program which positions NSCC as the Massachusetts state leader in this exploding field,” said Dr. Patricia A. Gentile, NSCC President. “The program is solid and cutting-edge. Its development, review, and approval has included input from experts from the college’s Marketing Program Advisory Board, non-NSCC affiliated faculty members, and industry leaders in the field, with final approval coming from the Massachusetts state Board of Higher Education.”
Social Media Marketing Certificate courses include: Marketing, Advertising, Social Media Marketing Strategy, E-Marketing and Introduction to Business, Intro to Digital Photography, Integrated Design Principles, Electronic Imaging, Composition and Public Speaking. Financial aid is available for those needing assistance to complete the 10 courses. Professionals who have already completed A.S. or B.S. degrees can have applicable courses transferred to this program for credit.
Students can begin the Social Media Marketing Certificate program and subsequently expand their academic credentials to earn an A.S. in Marketing or Graphic Design.
