NSCC Celebrates Black History Month!

North Shore Community College will celebrate Black History Month in February with a variety of events, all FREE and open to the public.  Events will be held at the Danvers Campus, 1 Ferncroft Road or the Lynn Campus, 300 Broad Street.  Please note that events may be subject to change/cancellation.

Wednesday, January 29 – We invite you to jump-start your spring semester on a positive note by participating in an Open- Mic Poetry Slam, 11:30am-1pm, Lynn Campus cafeteria.  All positive forms of the spoken word are welcome; theatrical, poetic, and lyrical. Thursday, February 133rd Annual Read-out-loud-A-thon of the Narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself, 3:00pm Lynn Public Library, 5 North Common Street, Lynn,

Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography in Lynn, MA in the winter of 1845.  Join us as we read aloud with the Lynn Community this vital and important manuscript.  Stay as long as you want, take part by reading a page, make some art or just listen as we celebrate.

Thursday, February 13 – Soul Food Dinner Invitation to participating NSCC students, faculty & staff, 5:30pm, Lynn Gym

The NSCC Read Team will meet at the Lynn Library at 3pm.  NSCC Read Team participants are invited to a Southern Soul Food Dinner at 5pm.  You must sign-up to participate as part of the NSCC Read Team and the dinner.  DEADLINE is Wednesday, February 5th to sign up for the NSCC Read-out-Loud-A-Thon team and Southern Comfort Food Dinner.  RSVPs to Julianne Howland, jhowland@northshore.edu, X2143.

Join us for a wonderful afternoon of music, movement and light refreshments as we bring together diverse neighboring communities for the purpose of increasing cultural awareness and racial harmony.  Virginia Peacock-Makkers, Co-Founder, Executive Director and Doreen Murray, Co-Founder, Artistic Program Director.

Wednesday, February 19Guided Tour of the African American Museum in Boston, Bus leaves the Lynn Campus at 1:30pm.  Sign up in Student Life, Lynn Campus, LW170 or the Danvers Campus, DB132 with a refundable cash deposit of $10.

Thursday, February 20Screening and discussion of Holding Ground: The Rebirth of Dudley Street, 9:30am at both the Lynn Campus gym and the Danvers Campus, DS106B.  A documentary of hope and activism after decades of disinvestment by the government, banks and business, the residents of an ethnically diverse Boston neighborhood joined together to rebuild their community.
