Baird-Kelly, a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, is president of NSCC’s Veterans Club. He is enrolled in the college’s management program.

The NSCC Director’s award is given to an individual who is supportive of club members and appreciates individuality, someone who also demonstrates going above and beyond the call of duty and has made a positive and sustaining impact on his or her club.

Baird-Kelly was chosen to receive the award as he: donates his time to community service; he recognizes that in sharing his personal story he can help others to learn; and he actively seeks opportunities to take on leadership roles at the college and beyond.

He is an outstanding advocate for disability issues. A member of the Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society, he recently served on a panel entitled “The Many Faces of Disability:  What Do You See When You Look at Me?”  Speaking honestly about his experience of disability and his journey to academic success, and through his excellent communication style, he provided the audience with a valuable perspective and a deeper understanding of disability issues.   He explained that he made himself do things that people said he could not do.  Though it was painful and difficult, he learned to push himself to work harder and reach his goals.

He has served as a volunteer tutor at the Brickett Elementary School in Lynn. Lisa Milso, Director of Student Life at the college, noted in presenting the award, “Whether encouraging change in a young child’s experience of school and the larger world, or taking the time to share his personal story in order to affect positive change, or serving as the leader of one of our valued clubs, Michael’s impact has been far-reaching and inspirational.”
