The one-year pilot program, the first of its kind regionally, is designed to help solve a longstanding public transportation issue to NSCC’s Danvers campus. Together, NSCC and Uber will help improve accessibility and transportation options for thousands of NSCC students.
Beginning September 6th, currently enrolled NSCC students will have access to discounted Uber rides when traveling to or from NSCC Danvers from the Beverly Depot or the North Shore Mall in Peabody, connecting students to their commuter rail and bus line transportation options.
“We have no public transportation to our Danvers Campus where over 4,000 students will be converging shortly. We know there are students who either don’t have transportation or depend on public transportation, who would seek an education if they could get to our Danvers campus, which is where all our popular allied health programs are offered. This partnership and pilot program will create a new opportunity for students who do not have vehicles and allow us to gauge interest and potential ridership to see if providing transportation options will make a difference in enrollments,” NSCC President Patricia A. Gentile said.
“We are honored to be working with North Shore Community College to help connect students to affordable and convenient transportation options by bridging the “first and last mile” gap to and from the Danvers campus,” said Chris Taylor, Uber’s Boston General Manager. “In cities and towns across the Commonwealth, Uber has helped improve access to economic growth and we are hopeful this partnership will similarly encourage enrollment and improve access to education and opportunities for students to grow and learn.”
About the program:
All rides must be requested through the Uber app and students who sign up will request the NSCC option when commuting to and from the Danvers campus. When students request the NSCC option in the app, NSCC will automatically cover the first $10 of the ride.
The ride must remain within the program boundaries to receive the discount. Rides that end outside of the predetermined locations will result in the cancellation of the discount and students will be responsible for the full fare.
NSCC’s Danvers campus is one of several community college campuses statewide that does not have public transportation available. Finding a solution to this has been a priority for President Gentile since her arrival three years ago.
